• The most notorious uses of ricin have been as assassination weapons:

• Boris Korczak (1980)
• The Minnesota Patriots Council (1991)
Markov Assassination
• On 7 September 1978, Georgi Markov, a Bulgarian exile journalist and writer, was jabbed in the thigh with an umbrella as he waited for a bus on Waterloo Bridge in London.
• That evening, he developed a fever, and his blood pressure began to drop; four days after the incident he succumbed to cardiac arrest.
• His wife had the police conduct an autopsy, during which a 1.52 mm diameter latinumiridium ball with two holes each drilled completely through it was removed.
Korczak Assasination (Attempt?)
• In 1980, Boris Korczak, a Soviet citizen who had been a CIA double agent was shopping in Tyson's Corner, VA, when he felt a slight sting: "something like a mosquito bite."
• After a few hours, he developed a temperature of 106 degrees, then his temperature dropped sharply.
• Internal bleeding and and a irregular heartbeat ensued.
• A few days later, he extracted a tiny metal ball from his "mosquito bite."
• Korczak survived, and is now a permanent U.S. resident
An alternative account, which apparently originated with the intelligence community and has been reported by several sources including J. A. F. Compton, incorrectly reports that Korczak died en route to Fairfax Hospital.
